This is a sample of a topographic step cut of the Seven Sisters mountains north of Black Mountain, NC. Montreat is in the valley on the lower right side, with the Asheville reservoir on the upper left. Each step represents 100' in elevation change. This prototype is cut out of a 7.25" x 10.5" x 3" piece of high-density urethane (a.k.a. sign board).
I find the step contours fascinating. When you move one of these carvings around in the light, the interplay of the contours and shadows is striking.
